Here's the thing... the moment you start your blog, you're running a business. And businesses need their own money!
Hosting, your domain, plugins, Canva, Kit... those expenses add up fast. And before long, you'll (hopefully!) have ad and affiliate income coming in too.
If all of that is mixed in with your groceries and Netflix, tax time turns into a LOT of digging through statements with a highlighter. (Not fun. At all.)
The fix is simple: keep your blog money completely separate from your personal money, starting right now.
Why Separate Your Blog Finances?
1. Tax time is SO much easier:
Every transaction in your business account is a business transaction. No guessing, no sorting, no "wait, what was this $14.99 charge?"
2. You know if your blog is actually making money:
When income and expenses live in one place, you can see at a glance what's coming in, what's going out, and what's left over.
3. It looks (and feels!) professional:
When a brand pays you for a sponsored post or an ad network sends your first payout, it lands in your BUSINESS account. That's a great feeling!
My Recommendation: Wise Business
I recommend Wise Business simply because it's an online account that's quick to set up, it comes with its own card for your work expenses, and it connects right to QuickBooks.
It also handles multiple currencies, which comes in handy when ad networks, affiliate programs or brands pay you from another country.
Let me lay it out for you!
1. Open a Wise Business account:
Sign up on the Wise Business website. It's all done online, so there's no trip to a branch.
NOTE: Wise is a financial technology company rather than a traditional bank, but for keeping your blog money in its own lane, it does exactly what you need.
2. Get a separate card for your work expenses:
Order the Wise card for your business account and use it ONLY for blog expenses. Add the digital card to your phone so you can use it right away.
For example, when you sign up for hosting in Module 3, pay with your Wise card, not your personal card. Same goes for your domain, plugins and any courses or tools for your blog.
3. Send ALL of your blog income to Wise:
Ad networks, affiliate programs, sponsored posts, digital product sales... every payout goes to your Wise account details.
If you need to pay yourself, transfer money from Wise to your personal account. Then pay for personal things from there. Never the other way around!
Connect Wise to QuickBooks and Let It Do Your Bookkeeping
This is my favorite part: Wise integrates with QuickBooks, so your bookkeeping basically runs itself!
Once they're connected, your Wise transactions sync over to QuickBooks automatically. No more typing in every expense by hand or uploading spreadsheets.
You can even pay bills from your Wise account and the connection logs them in QuickBooks for you, with fees marked as bank charges.
4. Connect your accounts:
Follow the steps on the Wise + QuickBooks page, choose the Wise currencies you want to sync, and pick which accounts they post to.
NOTE: For security, the connection needs to be re-authorized every 90 days. Pop a reminder in your calendar so your books don't quietly stop syncing!
5. Check in once a month:
Set aside 15 minutes a month to look over your transactions in QuickBooks and make sure everything is categorized correctly. That's it!
A separate account, a separate card, and automatic bookkeeping. Your future self (and your accountant!) will thank you.
I'm not an accountant, so check with a tax professional in your area about what you need to track and report for your blog.
Set this up now, before you start paying for hosting and tools in the next few modules, so every blog expense lands in the right place from day one!
